An exceptionally rare and technically significant IWC Portugieser, produced in platinum in a worldwide limited edition of just 25 pieces. Created for the 75th anniversary of the Portugieser collection, the IW397201 combines several of IWC’s most important complications in a single manufacture movement: a perpetual calendar with large digital date and month displays, leap-year indication and an integrated flyback chronograph. The substantial 45 mm case is crafted from 950 platinum and paired with a silver-plated dial. Despite the mechanical complexity, the dial remains remarkably legible, with the large digital calendar apertures providing one of IWC’s most distinctive interpretations of the perpetual calendar. Inside is IWC’s manufacture Calibre 89801, an automatic movement consisting of 474 components and offering approximately 68 hours of power reserve. The movement and skeletonized rotor are visible through the sapphire exhibition caseback. With only 25 examples produced worldwide, the platinum IW397201 is one of the rarest modern complicated Portugieser references. It is however missing the instruction booklet. It does include the original unused IWC microfiber cloth. It has the platinum deployant clasp which balances the watch nicely. It is in very good condition with no scratches on the case, it looks new there. There are some scratches on the underside of the lugs from strap removal. The watch is unpolished and has been part of my personal collection. Also included are two Camille Fournet calfskin straps—one new and unworn and one lightly worn in excellent condition—as well as the original OEM IWC strap in excellent condition. The watch is running and functioning properly. The combination of a 950 platinum case, manufacture perpetual-calendar/flyback chronograph movement and worldwide production of only 25 pieces makes the IW397201 an unusually scarce modern IWC. Examples are infrequently offered, particularly as complete, unpolished sets.
