The Grand Seiko SLGH005G White Birch was revealed in February 2021 and built the Evolution 9 design language around a specific engineering achievement: the Caliber 9SA5's Dual Impulse Escapement, an entirely new escapement type Grand Seiko developed in-house rather than adapting the Swiss lever escapement every other high-beat automatic still relies on. The dial's texture, inspired by the white birch forests around Grand Seiko's Shizukuishi studio, is the visible half of the story; the escapement is the half most buyers never see. The case is 40mm stainless steel, 11.7mm thick, with Grand Seiko's angular case geometry: wide lugs, a low centre of gravity, Zaratsu-polished surfaces alternating with hairline brushing. The dial's silvery-white texture reads as light filtering through birch bark rather than a flat surface, changing character with the angle it's viewed from. Grooved markers and faceted hands are cut for maximum reflected light, the same finishing standard Grand Seiko applies across its Evolution 9 dials. The movement is the Caliber 9SA5, built around the Dual Impulse Escapement: a Grand Seiko-developed alternative to the Swiss lever escapement, paired with a free-sprung balance and a horizontal gear train. It runs at 36,000 vph, hi-beat, while still holding an 80-hour power reserve through twin mainspring barrels, a combination that would normally trade one for the other. This is the first genuinely new escapement architecture from a major manufacture in decades, not an incremental refinement of an existing design.
